volunteer helps others learn english

Feb 22, 2017 | by The Salvation Army

Anna grew up in Kazakhstan with her family and moved to the United States to pursue a degree in single subject teaching. While looking for volunteer opportunities, Anna came across a volunteer program with The Salvation Army teaching Russian speakers English. "I felt that I could give back to the community and help out in a way that I felt was more effective," she says.

Anna enjoys creating lessons and assignments that help her students learn in a fun and interactive way. Anna struggled to get one of her students to learn the rules of grammar. Determined, she found a way to incorporate grammar into the lessons without her student knowing. When the student began using proper grammar, Anna became excited knowing that her student was learning and applying the material.

The volunteer program has given her an incredible family and allows Anna to gain experience in the field of her expertise while also providing her with the support structure she needs. Volunteers, her students, and many others are supportive of her endeavors and Anna continues to give back. "I adore them," Anna says of her students. "I think that anyone who would like to volunteer, should volunteer with The Salvation Army because it's not only a great opportunity to meet awesome people and help others, but it's a great, huge family of people that works for it to happen."
