HIP TO GET FIT

Apr 9, 2018 | by The Salvation Army

Al Ablong is a fitness instructor at the Oceanside Corps Community Center who truly creates an encouraging and safe environment for everyone to exercise and have fun. As a veteran of the United States Navy, he has extensive experience as a personal trainer with a Master’s Degree in Physical Education.

In recent years, he has become more passionate about senior fitness and hopes to keep his students physically active throughout the week. “I want to remind them that this is something they can do on their own at home,” says Al when talking about the exercises he incorporates. He encourages his participants to move, even for just half an hour a day to maintain their mobility.

The classes are also a great opportunity for seniors to socialize and interact with others. “Every day that I come in and I see the students smiling and laughing. It’s gratifying!” Al says. When observing the class, the determination and enthusiasm of every participant is inspiring. He demonstrates a series of low impact movements for the students while continually reminding them to be aware of their bodies, focus on safety, and have fun.   Volunteering is extremely important to Al as well, which is why he’s decided to pass on the knowledge he has gained. He understands that volunteering requires patience and states, “It takes one person at a time.”   We are ecstatic to have Al educate the community on physical fitness and help our seniors remain active!
