Leaving A Life Of Addiction Behind

Dec 15, 2016 | by The Salvation Army

When Alisa was growing up, she faced terrible violence and addiction at home. Her mother was an alcoholic, and her father worked long hours. Alisa suffered physical abuse at the hands of people she trusted. She dropped out of high school, ran away from home and became addicted to drugs and alcohol.

Alisa's life was completely out of control and she was in despair. It seemed she would never find sobriety or peace. When she tried to break up with her boyfriend, he smashed all the windows in her house and tried to burn it down. Suddenly, she was pregnant and homeless.

Then, she found The Salvation Army. Thanks to donors like you, Alisa reaffirmed her faith, graduated from our Adult Rehabilitation Center and finally escaped from addiction. "Everyone accepted me for who I was," says Alisa. "It was a true blessing."

Now Alisa and her children are living safely at a Salvation Army transitional shelter. She earned her high school diploma, found a job and is taking college classes. Alisa's mother even followed her example and stopped drinking.

Aliso is so grateful for this new start in life. She and her children give back by volunteering for The Salvation Army. "This is God's house, and this is where I plan to be," she says.
