SAN DIEGO AMERICORPS MEMBERS VOLUNTEER WITH STEPS RESIDENTS
AmeriCorps is a federally funded national community service organization. AmeriCorps members across the nation, aim to improve the lives of community members with the help of the organizations where they work.
The Salvation Army Sierra del Mar Divisional Headquarters is currently hosting two Ameri-Corps members in the office, Stacey Forcier and Grace Rice. This February, Stacey and Grace, along with other local AmeriCorps members volunteered at STEPS, a residential program at The Salvation Army’s Centre City Corps for men transitioning out of homelessness.
With the help of program volunteers and administrators, everyone enjoyed an uplifting afternoon complete with a day of fellowship and delicious food. The AmeriCorps members facilitated bocce ball, bean bag toss, and mini-golf. They handed out raffle tickets to the winners of each game to be exchanged for hygiene items. While the games were a fun break, the STEPS residents were also able to see just how much members of the community care about them.
After playing games and working up an appetite, STEPS residents prepped lunch using skills learned in weekly volunteer-led cooking classes. The menu included carne asada, pico de gallo, beans and Mexican rice. All food items were generously donated by Stump’s Family Marketplace in Point Loma. This is a great example of what we can accomplish when the community comes together to help those in need!
