2017 Chili Cook Off

Apr 21, 2017 | by The Salvation Army

With the support of volunteers and friends like you, The Salvation Army conducts Chili Cook Offs as the grand finale for cooking classes at our STEPS program. STEPS stands for “Shelter Transitional Employment Program Services.” It gives homeless men a stable place to live and helps them find jobs. The cooking classes teach students how to shop for and prepare healthy meals.

For the Chili Cook Off, teams of STEPS residents are paired with volunteers, like chefs, caterers and nutrition experts. The contest provides cooking practice. Plus, it allows them to work with successful businesspeople and often make valuable connections – which can lead to jobs. “The STEPS program taught me to cook,” says Edwin, a contest participant. “And it saved my life.” The cooking class volunteers also gain a greater understanding of how individuals become homeless. They hear the difficult stories of men who’ve been at a low point, but who have a new start in life through The Salvation Army programs you make possible.
